Dual Enrollment Opportunities for Forest Area Students
Eleventh and twelfth grade students have the opportunity to earn dual enrollment college credits at East and West Forest High Schools before they graduate in multiple ways, but the most utilized option is by taking courses approved by the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford (UPB) with FASD teachers. In several academic classes at both East and West, select secondary teachers have been approved as adjunct professors with the UPB, making them qualified to teach dual enrollment courses where students earn both high school credits towards high school graduation and college credits to be added to their college transcripts at accepting schools. When high school teachers join UPB, the program is called College in High School (CHS). For a small fee, students can apply to be accepted as a CHS student, affording them the opportunity to take classes in Pre-Calculus, Calculus, English Composition, Literature and Interpretation, Chemistry, Physics and/or American Political Process – all of which are tied to FASD 11th and 12th grade graduation requirements. This year the admission fee was paid for with a grant, so all could participate without any financial burden. Students can earn up to 23 college credits, and all successful participants recently learned that they are guaranteed admission to UPB after high school graduation, along with a $1000 scholarship from Pitt – Bradford due to their efforts as CHS students while in high school. Taking these classes can give students a chance to save significant tuition money, expose them to a college-level work load, and even give them an advantage in scheduling their freshman college courses. FASD is proud to provide this opportunity to our students and is thankful to its faculty for taking on an additional endeavor to meet the needs of our students. In this photo, students in the West Forest Literature and Interpretation course engage in a spirited peer-led debate with their teacher, Ms. Sarah Huth. At the end of the school year, these students will all earn 3 college credits to transfer to their accepting higher education institution. shown here from left are: Colter Bayle, Harley Ellenberger, Kaylyn Beichner, Kyla Morrison, Brooke Felleti, Becca Wagner, Jacob Shontz, Macalie Hoffmann, Hazel Hilyer and Ayla Reese. Student scheduling for 2025-2026 begins this month at FASD. Questions about next year’s schedules can be directed to the school counselor or building principal.
